RSS Explained

Mar 31 2008 / 4:30 pm Was written by Amber View Comments

Today I was asked about rss feeds, so I figured I could take a crack at explaining it in different terms. RSS feeds are one of those great inventions designed to make us more lazy.

In really, really basic terms:

The feed readers (there are many different ones available–my fave is netvibes cuz it also has a nice mobile version too) take a whole page of stuff and put the title and/or summary in a little list so its easier to see whats going on without having to troll through a bunch of useless crap around it.

Change of Scenery

Mar 30 2008 / 4:23 pm Was written by Amber View Comments

Since Wordpress has new version out, shortly I will be upgrading. I’m not running a big enough site to cause mass hysteria if something happens, but I just want to give the handful of folks who read me a heads up in case something goes horribly wrong.

Also in the beginning I loved the two-column minima clone theme I have going here, but now its taxing my nerves. The look of the site might change a hair or alot in the next few days. Once again…I’ll keep you guys posted.

*** Edit- Upgraded and the plugins still seem to work and like the way the new layout handles page real estate much better. Was feeling really cluttered for a min. Love it , Hate it?….. Drop us a line. Still tweaking the new layout so bear with us.

Batteries Dead, Crank Instead

Mar 28 2008 / 10:30 pm Was written by Amber View Comments

crankingmp3_01_01.jpg

Some of us are just ritually stupid and forget to charge things. My cell phone usually only has one bar even though I have two chargers at home, one in the car, and one at my best friends. Geekstuff4U has acquired a solution for those that have the same problem with their mp3 players. When the “Cranking mp3 player” decides to snooze out on you, it can be cranked back to life. One minute of cranking gives you ten minutes of power, so if you are in the middle of nowhere, you may want to alternate which arm you use.

Since this post will never be G-Rated in my mind, it has to end. All the green folks who see the benefit in it. Check it out.

Tools on the Telly

Mar 28 2008 / 10:17 pm Was written by Amber View Comments

Was scrolling through the rest of the blog world and noticed a post on Ubergizmo promoting the Sonic Screwdriver currently in use on Doctor Who. The screwdriver itself is nerd common knowledge across the pond and for quite a few folks on this side as well so that didn’t phase me much. I do not have enough room to detail Doctor Who and its entailments I’m sure three are plenty of wikis out there. I checked the link on Ubergizmo out to see if the price had dropped since I bought one a while back and I saw the Judoon scanner for sale (pictured below.)

Its always good to see the other side.

Free Photoshop …Just really Lite

Mar 27 2008 / 3:05 pm Was written by Amber View Comments

pscs3_beta_presentation_final-30.png

Today there is a beta of Photoshop Express on the loose. Free Photoshop online so you no longer have to suck at it. It is not as fantastic as some of the freebies that have been designed to compete with Photoshop, but its out there for the newbies to enhance their videos. According to Adobe, when the beta is over they plan to have support for Flickr to make it even easier.

There is currently a limit on the pics to a certain size, but other than that it seems like something fun to play with for novices and lazy folks. Google has a similar project in the pipe and alot of folks that use Flickr use Picnik , but it will sure help the Adobe crew score some new customers and maybe (crossing fingers) their other software can have the price pared down a bit.

It Starts With the Children

Aeon Co. has dropped off this lovely robot babysitter in a Japanese mall. Now robots do look cool, but it bothers me that this robot has a camera and projector for eyes which read a special badge given to the child and project ads. The company states the babysitter is designed so that the kids can get used to seeing robots because they will be more commonplace as they get older.

Being terrified of robot overlords taking over and destroying us…I hope that is not true.
