As I have stated before many times, I have having to drag my laptop all the way out to find out if there is WiFi nearby and I never could bring myself to purchase the little finders because they would just get lost in the sea of gadgets on my desk. A great solution comes in the form of “A Step in The Right Direction“, they light up solid when there is signal, blink when you are out of luck. Not the most aesthetically pleasing shoes, but they are harder to lose than the other WiFi finders unless you have acres of shoes.

Wordlocks: Use Them and Feel Stupid for Not Inventing Them
Posted by the simian | Under gadgets Friday May 30, 2008Another simple idea that makes me feel like an idiot for not filing craploads of patents. Because people cannot remember numbers if you threaten their lives, Wordlocks are so genius and I am sad its not going to be my money. Thanks Popgadget for reminding me that I am an idiot. <$10 at Amazon and these other fine retailers.
Solar Powered Mp4
Posted by the simian | Under gadgets, games Wednesday May 28, 2008if you want to green up your tunes manufacturers are beginning to capitalize on the energy in the world that is just hanging out and not being optimally used. Somewhat like the cranking mp3 player featured before, Thanko has created a personal media player that can charge with a little less effort your part. Without the suggestive cranking, the solar powered PMP gets about 30+ minutes of play for every hour of charge. If you jam the tunes all day you might need to get a couple of them. It has some games preinstalled and an SD expansion slot for those long walks.
4GB for $95 and you never have to buy batteries or a replacement charger.
Use Those Useless Express Card Drives
Posted by the simian | Under gadgets Tuesday May 27, 2008I do not know anyone that uses the express drives on their laptop unless they tinker too much and blow their internal wireless cards. Those drives just hang out and do nothing. Since the average laptop hangs out with only about 60-120 GB of hard drive space, a few extra GB never hurt anyone. A-Data made some express slot friendly drives which add either 16 or 32 GB without the bulk of carrying around another drive separately. Caters to your laziness and your lack of space. 16/32 GB for 65.99/129.99 .
They are actually currently sold out but sold here and here. If you want them both and want to combine shipping they are both available at the second link, just the smaller one is $4 more.

Universal SIM Unlock Card
Posted by the simian | Under gadgets Wednesday May 7, 2008Yet another tool to unlock those pesky carrier locked phones. This one involves a little sim cutting but they claim that it makes it work better.
Technical Details:
Does not do any changes to your SIM card or phone (you only have to make a cut in the SIM card) Does not influence any communication between the phone and the network and vice versa Real time on the fly communication modifications, does not reroute SIM card traffic (It’s transparent to the phone) Work with 1.8V, 3V and 5V SIM cards Works with normal and inverted protocol SIM cards It’s slim enough to fit together with your SIM card into most phone’s SIM socket.
